How did this individual make a
contribution to their field or to society/culture at large? | Samuel C. C. Ting is a Chinese American who studies particle physics. He is famous for his discovery of the J particle, which was a new, totally unpredicted, heavy particle. Because of this discovery, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1976. He later also worked on a new project, the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) to try to find antimatter and learn where it came from. AMS was launched on Space Shuttle Endeavour on May 16, 2011. On May 8, 2017: 100 Billion particles measured! AMS results, based on nine years in space and more than 145 billion cosmic rays, have changed our understanding of the cosmos. The AMS project is still going on right now. . . |
